BURIAL-PLACE OF D. H. LAWRENCE H. Lawrence is not buried
in Vence. He was, of course, but about ten years ago—I haven't a note by me of the exact date—his remains were exhumed, sealed in a casket, and sent by motor-hearse to Marseilles for cremation. The ashes were taken to Taos, New Mexico, where they now lie. At the request of Frieda Lawrence, who was then in Taos, I attended the disinterment and witnessed the opening of the grave and the sealing of the casket. The headstone, a phoenix in rough mosaic without wording, is still in Vence—or was until the outbreak of war.—
