Waugh abroad
Sir: May I correct Auberon Waugh on a Point he raised rather lightly, in his recent article `Aux armes, citoyens' (13 March). Far from having won their point against Michel Debre on the changes in deferment laws, there are very many students, my son Included (having been born in France of a French father), who are having to interrupt their studies in order to comply with these new deferment laws.
In the case of my son, if we cannot, somehow, obtain special dispensation, he Must interrupt his degree course at London University, following which he will lose his grant, lose his already acquired three-year residence requirements, and will, in the Worst configuration, have to wait four years (one year in the army, another three fulfilling his three-year residence requirements, because I cannot possibly afford the fees we would be required to pay as a rGreign student) before he can continue his studies.
