In a verxstriking letter published in our issue of to-day
the Bishop of London emphasizes from his own experience at the front the need for national concentration which we have insisted upon with special reference to the drink question. He has seen the war with his own eyes, and he tells us in plaia terms, and with the utmost sincerity of speech, that without national concentration we shall not be able to fulfil our trust or win our battle. It is not a question of State Socialism, or teetotalism, or whether the State has in normal times the right to dictate how men shall spend their money or their lives. It is purely and solely a war question, a question of stopping indulgence in luxuries which prevent the nation giving its full strength and full attention to the need of the hour.
