The election of a Member for the County of Antrim,
in the room of General O'Neill, who lately succeeded his brother as Earl O'Neill, took place at Carrickfergus on Wednesday, with the anticipated result ; Mr. Nathaniel Alexander, of Portglenone House, being returned without opposition. Mr. Alexander was proposed by Mr. George Macartney, of Lissanoure, who was himself at one time spoken of as a candidate for the seat. Mr. Macartney spoke with indignation of the attempt to divide the Tory interest in the county, by putting forward Mr. Mac- donnell ; which he ascribed to the Carlton Club. He recommended Mr. Alexander, because he was prepared to uphold the principles of his predecessor, with whose family he is connected. The representation of the county had remained in that family for a very long time,—Major Rowan, Mr. Alexander's seconder, said for a hundred years ; and General O'Neill had held the post for forty years. In a very brief address, Mr. Alexander promised to keep General O'Neill for his model.
