Arts choice
• Theatre: Previews to note for those who will take a chance (at reduced prices) before the critics have their say are Brendan Behan's Richard's Cork Leg, with the Dubliners, at the Royal Court (till September 18) and the revival of Private Lives, with Maggie Smith and Robert Stephens, at the Queen's (till September 20).
• Music: Rudolf Kempe (see ' The Proms' on facing page) conducts the Royal Philharmonic in a programme climaxed by Tchaikovsky's ' Pathetique ' at the Festival Hall on Tuesday.
• Pop: Frank Zappa and Hawkwind are featured in 'Rock at the Oval' (which is being advertised with a drawing of W. G. Grace!), at the cricket ground from mid-day to 9 pm this Saturday.
• Art: Anyone seeing The Age of NeoCtassicism exhibitions, and everyone should (see page 439), will be interested in the series of Thursday evening lectures at the Victoria and Albert Museum on assorted aspects of the display.
• Television: As well as the rest of the new autumn series (which are mostly the old series back again), the week offers a Music on 2 profile of Janet Baker, who will be singing some of her favourite arias and talking with Bernard Levin (BBC 2, Sunday), and two Longford programmes — a Panorama closeup of his lordship (BBC 1, Monday) and a Midweek preview of his private Report on Pornography on the eve of its publication (BBC 1, Wednesday).
