Journey to Mont St. Michel.-The Prince orders an iron cage to be destroyed, the remnants of which are still there.

Journey to Vendome.-The Prince assumes the command of his regiment of Dragoons. He follows his regiment from Vendome to Valenciennes.

April 28. His drat battle. Battles of Bos- su and Quarignon.

May 7.-The Prince is made Mareschal de Camp. He commands a brigade of dra- goons under Marshal Lackner.

End of July.-Is quartered at Metz with bis brigade, under the orders of General D'Harvine.

Sept. 11.-The Prince is made Lieutenant- General. Sept. 20.-Battle of Palmy.

Journey to Paris.-The Prince joins Du- mourlez's army.

Nov. 6. Battle of Jemappes.

End of the year.-The Duke of Chartres proceeds to Paris to fetch his sister, and conducts her to Toninay. He endeavours In vain to persuade his father to retire to America.

1793, Feb. The Duke of Chartres rejoins the army.

Siege of Maestricht.

1793, March March 18.-Battle of Nerwiade. The Duke of Chartres is obliged to seek a refuge at the head-quarters of the Prince of Coburg at Mons.

1793, April April 12.-Having refused to enter the Austrian service, with the rank of Lieu- tenant-General, he starts for Switzerland. April 22.-Arrived at Bale. Gustave de Montjoye joins him there with Mademoi- selle d'Orleans and Madame de Geniis. They may not remain at Zurich or Zug. General Montesquieu receives them at Bremgarten. Mademoiselle d'Orleans enters a convent there.

June 20. -The Duke of Chartres leaves Bremgarten on a tour in Switzerland, on foot, alone, almost without money. The monks of St. Gothard refuse to admit him.

..Retum to Bremgarten.-M. de Montesquieu procures a situation for the young Prince under a false name, as Professor In a Col- lege at Reichenau.

Nov. 6.-Monseigneur the Duke of Orleans dies on the scaffold. The Duke of Char- tres was at Relchenan. It is there that iheame inherits the title of the Duke of Or.

• .After a sojourn of eight months at Relche- nau, he rejoins General Montesquieu at Bremgarten.

Towards the end of 1794 the young Duke of Orleans and his sister leave Switzerland ; Mademoiselle d'Orlean.s to join her aunt, Madame la Princesse de Conti, in Hun- gary ; and the Prince with the intention of crossing to America.

London The brothers arrive at London. Interview of the Duke of Orleans with Monseigneur le Comte d'Artois (Monsieur.) They em- bark to pay a visit to their mother ; and touch at Minorca, Mahon, and Barcelona, without being able to join their mother. Twickenham. • They return to England, and take a house at Twkkenham ; from whence they make excursions into the interior of England and Scotland.

Journey to Malta.

Death of the Count de Beaujolais at Malta. Monseigneur the Duke of Orleans proceeds to Messina. Is received at the Court of Sicily, and his marriage with the Princess Marie Amelia is spoken of. He is desirous of visiting Spain.

Gibraltar Lands at Gibraltar. He Is repulsed by English policy, and conveyed to England. He arrives at London.

The Duke is allowed to rejoin his mother at Figuieres. On the point of embarking at Portsmouth, he is joined by Made- moiselle d'Orleans, his sister, whom he had not seen since they parted at Brem- garten. 1794.

They arrive at Malta at the commencement of the year.

The Duke presents himself at Palermo at the Sicilian Court.

The marriage is agreed upon.

1809, Jan. Mahon The Prince proceeds to Mahon to fetch his

mother.
