CALCUTTA ELECTRIC.

At the recent meeting of shareholders of the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation, the Chairman, Lord Meston, was able to give a good account of the position, and'to show that while the circumstances had been unfavourable to any marked increase in revenue, there had been a considerable accession of new customers. The depression in the Jute industry had hit the Company rather severely, gross revenue having been affected, while the effect on the load factor had caused a rise of £16,000 in running costs. Some shareholders had evidently expressed anxiety with regard to a scheme under discussion for the erection of a Calcutta Municipal Power Station. The Chair- man, however, stated that the Corporation already multi' factured their own current far purposes of water supply, etc., and the proposed scheme would take over the other services

which the Company now performed for them. In the view of the directors, the scheme was economically unsound and could not result in the production and distribution of electricity at a price comparable with the rates tendered by the Company. Even, added the Chairman, if the scheme did mature, the Com- pany would lose something under 5 per cent. of its gross revenue.
