There are at the present time no fewer than 1,691
persons in the 'Workhouse of Marylebone, who are fed, clothed, and lodged at the ex- pense of the ratepayers ; and 5,000 receiving, out-door relief, partly in bread, which is made in the house and of the finest quality. The de- mand for this species of relief has been so great, that during the past week twenty-one batches have been baked, consuming sixty-four sacks of flour, making 4,708 loaves, the total weight being 18,832 lbs. The distress of the poor, in consequence of the inclemency of the weather, increases so much, that at the meeting of the Board of Guardians yes- terday 300 new applications were made to them for relief. The number of deaths has also increased to a frightful extent in the Workhouse ; for during the last seven days no less a number than thirty-four paupers have died, being double the number of deaths at the same period of last year.—Evening Papers.
