The French crisis is over. M. Jules Simon is the

new Prime Minister, with the portfolio of Minister of the Interior, in which he succeeds M. de Marcere. M. Martel, a Left-Centre man of a very moderate type, succeeds M. Dufaure as Keeper of the Seals and Minister of Justice, and no other change is to be made at all, General Berthaut retaining the portfolio of the Minister of War. With this the Left have wisely contented themselves, the more, that the new First Minister is committed to complete religious liberty more deeply than to any other point in the Republican programme.
