We regret to record the death of Professor Brugsch, at

Berlin, on September 10th. He was one of the greatest of Egyptologists, and an Egyptologist is a great deal more than an antiquarian. He must also be an artist and an engineer, and is investigating in the only place where such investigation is possible the early history of civilisation. Egypt is, moreover, the only land whence we may expect documents of value. Nothing perishes there except throughviolence, and competent excavators like Professor Brugsch may yet discover papyri of inestimable value, early narratives explaining history, or early letters confirming statements now the cause of endless questioning. An Egyptologist to succeed must be one of the most many-sided of mankind; and Professor Brugsch did succeed.
