Sir: Calvert Casey (Books, 1 August) was evidently a tortured soul: but, since Ray- mond Carr presents him as simultaneously `obsessed with cross-dressing' and with 'his clothing reduced to a pair of rotten trousers', the source of his spiritual anguish is surely not far to seek.
