Praise for Howse

Sir: May I say what an absolute joy it was to read Christopher Howse on Spain (Travel, 1 April). I was just about to give up on print journalism — every article seemed to be trying to sell me either a worldview I didn’t subscribe to or a product I didn’t want — but Howse’s elegant piece changed my mind. How very reassuring it is to know that The Spectator, almost alone among modern magazines, realises that the average Brit is drowning in information and advertisements and wants more than anything to laugh, or to be lost in admiration for a beautiful bit of writing.
