Looking Forward

Those waiting for a child or looking out For landscapes to grow up within the mind Release as much as men dare lose of self, Instruct themselves in doubt Letting the child grow, the landscape be defined.

But children argue down the avenues Of all men's wonder and take something of The marvel from them, and a landscape is So patterned that no man need move As if the trees to grow required his life.

To watch is hardest kind of work for us, Forgetting how we feel ourselves alone ; The child achieved is soon unknown, And landscapes send men hunting deep within, Homesick for waiting, learning about loss.
