War service
Sir: Mr Henry Adler's letter (29 April) much interested me, as I was one of many 'British Fascists' in the 'thirties. We did not 'support Hitler', but opposed the war because we did not think it was in British interests, in the tradition of Charles James Fox, Lloyd George, Ramsay MacDonald and many others.
I entered the Colonial Service as a teacher in the Falkland Islands and in June 1940 I was arrested and detained there simply and solely because of my menlbership of British Union. (There was, of course, no charge or trial.) On my return to this country I immediately volunteered for the Army, on the old-fashioned principle: my country, right or wrong. I served for the rest of the war in the Royal Tank Regiment.
