Unlettered

A reader received this postcard from the Belgian Travel Service in St Albans: You don't know how lucky you are to be living in these modern times and being able to visit Bruges. I understand that the place has barely changed since I was there in the seventeenth century with my chums Rubens and Van Dyck. We really did have a good time painting our masterpieces. And now you can savour that Bruges creative atmosphere with the compliments of Belgian Travel Ser- vice.

If you book any Belgian Travel Service break between now and the end of the year, they'll give you two large Brueghel prints absolutely FREE. Book within 14 days of receiving this card and you will also be sent a FREE copy of a full colour 120 page National Gallery publi- cation of Flemish Paintings.

The only thing I wish we had in the sev- enteenth century was chips with mayon- naise — what a still life work they would have made!

Tot ziens [Signed] Pieter Brueghel Pete Brueghel P.S. You can see our work in the Groeninge Museum, Bruges and in gal- leries in Antwerp and Brussels.

If you have an example of a crass, illiter- ate, ignorant, irrelevant or embarrassing letter or notice from a company or public body, send a copy to Unlettered, The Spectator, 56 Doughty Street, London WC1N 2LL. f10 for each one printed.
