Dr. Geikie regards his subject from the orthodox point of view, but his treatment is liberal, and he eipresses himself with freedom and candour. The interest of his sketches never fails. The illastra-

tions have some force, though they seem to us rather what a Western mind would conceive of the personages whom they are supposed to re- present than to have a genuinely Oriental character.
