The full reports of the French Departmental Elections show a

net gain of 181 seats for the Republicans, of whom 26, however, are Constitutionalists, or Catholic Republicans. Out of 1,436 seats, the Reactionaries only carried 224. It is -calculated that if the Parliamentary elections turn out equally badly for the Royalist Reactionaries, they will only number one- fifth of the next House. If this happens, the Reactionary rump will soon disappear altogether, and it may then be possible to form a real Conservative Party loyal to the Republic, but at the same time opposed to extreme measures. All well-wishers -of France will hope for such a result.
