In the debate on Thursday the first intrigue of the
Govern- ment, attempted through its external allies, was delay. Lord' Grosvenor, strongly assisted by Lord Etch°, Mr. Henley, Mr. Dillwyn, and Sir R. Knightley did what they could to force an adjournment over the holidays, but the genuine Liberals would not allow it ; and Mr. Disraeli, after what he justly called a policy of "sustained silence," was compelled very reluctantly to yield to the good sense of the House in favour of immediate discussion.
