Aitken and I
Sir: To judge by his dyspeptic Diary piece on me (28 June), Boris Johnson did not have a good day at the races. Can I set the

record straight on a couple of points?
First, I am no 'arms dealer' — not even in pieces of 'real estate with 20mm cannon'. Nor did Jonathan Aitken learn anything at my knee. Much though I have enjoyed his company over the years, our only business association has been over Aitken Hume.
Second, I have not, as Mr Johnson sug- gests, ever 'denied being at the Ritz' on the fateful weekend in September 1993. As I told the Guardian and as I believe they accept, I was staying there at the time, whilst my home was being renovated, but did not know of the presence of Mr Aitken, Mr Ayas or Mr Al Fayed. Thus, Mr John- son is expecting me to be clairvoyant if he thinks I know 'what really happened'. Wafic Rida Said
