Dead liberty
Sir: Diana Geddes is sweeping in her assumptions (`Taking liberties', July 15). One, she says signatories to Charter 88 complain. Two, she suggests that France is the only possible model of modern demo- cracy for the UK to look at — and as such is found wanting.
However, as one of the aims of the Charter signatories initially is to see the debate on these vital constitutional issues widened, I am delighted to see it spread across two pages of The Spectator.
Charter 88 supporters are asking for (not complaining about) constitutional reform. After 300 years, we believe an overhaul is long overdue. In the process we shall have the benefit of a world-wide range of examples to select the best and most appropriate aspects for a modern democra- cy approaching the 21st century. I hope that other countries, including France, will in time re-examine their 'constitutional arrangements' in our wake. In the mean- time we on this side of the Channel should set our own house in order.
