It is a striking fact that the Roman Catholic Church,
through its organ, the Voce della Verita, which is controlled by Jesuits, regards Mr. Rhodes's will as admirable. His is the kind of plan, says the Voce, through which, if wealthy Catholics will but support it, Catholic education may be made to vanquish hostile forces and "rule the conscience of the uni- verse." Protestants always dread this project, and are unwilling to concede even so just a demand as that for a Roman Catholic University in Ireland, but wealthy Roman Catholics seem to doubt it, and contribute to seminaries much less than their means would justify. They have at least one solid reason for their hesitation. From Wycliffe and Luther to Renan and alivart the most dangerous opponents of Roman Catholicism have been educated as Roman Catholics and in the Roman Catholic way. You cannot educate without enlightening, and in all Roman Catholic countries the priests complain that the enlightened "wander."
