The Duke of Northumberland has appointed a Committee to visit
all the principal shipbuilding and engineering establishments in the United King- dom, to collect such facts as they may deem useful for the conducting of the national establishments, and also for the advantage of the mercantile marine of the country.—Portsmouth Times and Naval Gazette.
The annuity to the late Mr. Henry Bell, whose services in regard to the propulsion of vessels by steam were acknowledged by the grant of a pension of 1001. a year by the Clyde Trustees, having ceased with his death, the same public board, by an unanimous resolution on Tuesday, agreed to grant a pension of the same amount to the widow of Mr. Bell.—Eclinburgh Courant.
Mr. Simpson, M. Poitevin, and Madame Poitevin, were today tried at the Ilford Petty Sessions, on a summons obtained by the Society for the Protection of Animals, charging them with cruelty to a heifer which had died after going up attached to a balloon. Mr. Parry said Mr. Simpson and M. Poite- vin would plead guilty, and willingly pay the penalty.
