Student protest
Sir: We shall be most obliged if you w allow us the courtesy of your columns stress a point that may be of some impo ance to your younger readers, especia those attending university for the first time.
The impression has been given by so university authorities that it is compulso to join the National Union of Students.
This is not so, and whilst it is often rule that undergraduates join their respecti University Students Guild or Union, t does not apply to the National Union Students, which is merely a trade union the normal understanding of that descn tion. It is up to the individual's own wis whether he wishes to join the Natio• Union of Students and he cannot be co pelled to do so.
We successfully took up such a case behalf of an undergraduate and it was c firmed to us by the university concerned, the Department of Education and Scie that membership of the National Union Students could not be compulsory.
This should clarify the position to un graduates who may not be sure of their n in the matter.
