During the fiscal year ended on June 80th the United
States received an addition to its population of only 110,844 as a result of immigration—an extraordinary contrast to pre-War conditions, and a tribute to the manner in which the restrictive law, limiting the annual immigration from countries in the old world to 3 per cent. of the number of their- natives resident in the United States according to the census of 1910, is operating. In the past twelve months 809,556 alien immigrants arrived in America, while in the same period 198,712 alien- emigrants quitted the country. An analysis of the excess of inward-bound aliens shows that of the net gain of 110,844, 104,326 were women and only 6,518 were men ; the classification " men " comprises all persons of the male sex, including a large number of boys not yet of working age. The preponderance of women is due to the fact that the present immigration is largely assisted from America and consists of women and children 'sent for by men already established in-the United States.
