My Godchild. By Mary H. Debenham. (National Society.)— Miss Theodosia
Carteret is called to the deathbed of a woman who is one of a company of strolling players, and stands godmother to a girl whose baptism has been delayed. The child seems to be at the point of death, but she recovers to go through various adven- tures, the being stolen among them, as also the playing of a part of no small courage in the George Gordon riots. The tale is of no little merit and interest; only the story of the riot has been told before in a way so masterly that no comparison is likely to be favourable.
