Liberia! education

Sir: In his article about direct grant schools Logie Bruce Lockhart writes "perhaps the Liberals at least would not find it impossible to live up to their name and to show that in this case they are prepared to put freedom and moderation before doctrinaire egalitarianism."

Mr Bruce Lockhart and your readers may like to know that the three Liberals on the Hertfordshire County Council voted with the Labour members to withdraw the County Council's thirty places from the Haberdashers' Aske's girls school. At a meeting of the County's education committee one Liberal voted against the proposal but changed his mind at the full council meeting saying that the Liberal 'group' (all three!!) had agreed to support the Labour Party proposal and he had to toe the party line.
