Elsewhere the changeful stream of pleasure casts up new attractions.
At the Italian Opera, HEaoLD's Zampa was produced on Thursday, under more favourable auspices than it was at the beginning of the sea- son; when FORNASARls absence thrust the chief part upon the unpre- pared Signor FE.LteE. Now, FORNASARI embodied the rough and for midable pirate ; and LABLACHE gave importance to the little part of Dandolo, a servant.
No sooner had CakilLorrat GEM flown on the wings of steam from London to Paris, traversing the distance at a speed proportioned to the rapidity of her bounding evolutions across the stage, and performing in the two capitals on successive nights, than CERITO rises from the mimic wave as the Ondine, exercising a fascination over the audience almost equal to that which the spirit of the waters exerts over the poor fisherman. The tripping and revolving movements of this delightful danseuse are more aerial than ever : her footfall is noiseless ; she poises herself on one toe like a feather on its quill ; and her postures glide one into another with graceful undulations. In the fanciful Pas de l'Ombre, the feature of this ballet, the shadow of her form flitting across the moon-lit ground gives an appearance of flying to the play ful leaps she takes.
The French Plays are now eminently attractive: in addition to the beautiful Mademoiselle PLESSY, with her elegant manner, exquisite enunciation, and significantly quiet style of acting, there is M. VOLNYS, the best representative of the finished gentleman that French comedy can boast, and possessed of powers of pathetic expression in a high de- gree. Their performance of the domestic drama, Elle eat Folk, in which the husband's delusion is fancying his wife to be mad, is con- summately fine. CARTIONY, as the physician, is admirable also : in- deed, the piece was excellently played throughout- Mademoiselle MERY is a naive and sprightly actress of impulsive young ladies—a class not till now adequately represented this season : her personation of one of Les Demoiselles de St. Cyr, PLESSY being her schoolfellow, gave piquancy to a lengthy and not very lively five-act piece of in- trigue, the last novelty of ALEXANDRE Dumas at the Theatre Fran- cais.. French comedy is now enjoying a glorious reign at the St. James's Theatre. Mr. MITCHELL has taken advantage of this rare combi- nation of talent to produce the famous Figaro of BEAUMARCHAIS ; which is promised for Wednesday next, with a cast of brilliant completeness : PLESSY is the Susanna, VOLNYS the Count, CARTIGNY Figaro, FOR- GEOT the Page, and the Countess a new debutante.
Lady Henrietta having been banished as an impostor from the Drury Lane boards, the Revolt of the Harem has been substituted for the Statute Fair; Mademoiselle LUCILE G RAHN being the leader of the warlike odalisques.
FARREN is going the round of his popular parts at the Haymarket. At the Lyceum, the Forty Thieves have taught people to pronounce "open sesame" in silver accents. Two amusing interludes, Polltamania and Love-Birds, in the latter of which Miss FORTESCUE made her ap- pearance, vary the entertainments.
