HARVEYS 1796 COMPETITION

The Spanish travel quiz, which appeared in The Spectator of 21 January brought in a good crop of learned answers.

The first prize winner, drawn by lot, is J. M. Bray of London SW11. The first prize is a book token for £30 and the four bottles from the Harveys 1796 range consisting of Manzanilla, Superior Fino, Palo Cortado and Fine Old Amontillado. The eleven runners-up will also receive the four bottles from this range.

The answers were:

In English eyes: 1 c; 2d; 3 b; 4 e; 5 f; 6 a.

Moorish matters: 1 Trafalgar; 2 Charles V on the building of the cathedral in the mosque at Cordoba; 3 Boabdil, the last Moorish king of Granada; 4 Seville. People and places: 1 Seville; 2 Toledo; 3 Salamanca; 4 Zaragoza; 5 Barcelona.

Grandees: 1 Duke of Wellington; 2 Prince of the Asturias; 3 A ruby now in the crown of state; 4 Earl Nelson.
