The raids into Ulster were carried out in the eatly

hours of Wednesday. Tyrone, Fermanagh and Derry were the areas mainly affected. The kidnapped Unionists were carried off by armed gunmen in motor-cars to unknown destinations. The British Government telegraphed instructions that the troops in Northern Ireland should act in defence of the existing frontier until the new one could be established. They also telegraphed to Mr. Collins, warning him that such raids were not merely a breach of the truce but "gravely imperil the Treaty."
