Reports have been current all the week of a cession
of Mexican territory to France. The provinces of Sonora and Chihuahua in particular are said to have been ceded in return for the great services rendered by France to Mexico. The Maniteur emphatically denies these reports, and it is prima facie improbable that the Emperor should for the sake of such a possession bring on himself a war with the United States. The most probable explanation of the story is that certain mines have been mortgaged to France, as property, not territory, in security for the debt owing by Mexico to the Empire, and that the transaction has been seized on by persons who, in the interest of the South, desire to excite ill-will between France and the Union.
