The Word of God and the Ground of Faith. Six
Discourses by the Bishop of London. (Murray.)—The Bishop has endeavoured to make, and completely succeeded in making, these sermons " as little as possible controversial." But the result is, that while we share, we are unable to entertain, in any vary lively form, the hope which the Bishop expresses "that they may be of use to some who, on the one hand, are unable to regard free inquiry respecting the Books of the Bible as a sin, and yet, on the other, desire to retain the deepest reverence" for them. The fact is, the discourses are essentially common-place, and were not worth printing. They have, however, that sober common-sense tone which the Bishop of London always maintains, and in which we heartily wish that his clergy would be more apt to follow his example.
