More than half the volume is occupied with biographical 'notices of the chief exponents of the various sports, both professional and amateur. Ailalo (writer on sea-fishing, &c.), Aitken (foot- ball player), C. W. Alcock (secretary of Surrey County Cricket Club, &c.), Sir C. Alexander (owner of famous kennel of terriers), F. Alexander (owner of racehorses), C. E. Allen (football player), Lord Alverstone (president of Amateur Athletic Association), Lord Annaly (M.P.H.), A. E. Anthony (steeplechase jockey). There niust be nearly a thousand of these celebrities.
