Over the Border
SIR,—Enid Lakeman and her friends should stop misrepresenting the result of the 1951 election. As I wrote in the Annual Register at the time: 'The Liberals polled 1,890:938 less, the Conservatives 1,222,435 more, and Labour 652,649 more. It should be remembered that four Ulster Unionist members were returned unopposed . . . and large Conserva- tive votes were cast for seven Liberals and one Independent (Mr. W. J. Brown . . .). Therefore, making reasonable adjustments, it would seem that the number of Socialist and Conservative supporters who voted was almost exactly equal.'
